H Bar W Ranch

The H Bar W Ranch is a small Appaloosa breeding operation nestled among the most breathtaking acreage and mountain scenery one could ever hope to find in the northernmost part of western North Carolina in Ashe County. The house itself sits atop a hill naturally terraced by over a hundred years of cow-grazing. Both the land and the horses are the fulfillment of a lifelong dream of Ray and Marsha Holmes. And now that all three of their children have grown and begun to assume part responsibility for the barn chores and horse caring, the H Bar W has taken on the characteristics of a true family owned-and-run business.

Ray and Marsha first started their horse operation by breeding AQHA horses, but they soon found themselves attracted to the "flash" of the Appaloosas. After selling off two of their quarter horse studs in order to acquire an own son of the great Dreamfinder, their switch over to the breed had begun in earnest. Because that stallion, Dreamer's Fancy, had been bred to The Executive on the maternal side, they then sought out a group of The Executive daughters to breed to Fancy. They have since become huge fans of the lineage and now feel that they have the best of the 90's to cross with the best of the 80's. In addition to the seven The Executive daughters, Fancy has also been bred to three of the remaining quarter horse mares, so that by 1995 Ray and Marsha were getting at least three good halter babies every year.

Dreamer's Fancy now has a total of 42 get with seven of them actively showing in 2000, putting Fancy 23rd on the Leading Sires List of Halter Point Earners. In 2001 Fancy has four get on the way. Two of the four mares have never had a Fancy baby, and Ray and Marsha are very excited at the prospects. They intend to breed most of The Executive daughters to Dreamer's Fancy for 2001 babies. The quarter horse mares are to be bred this go-round to a quarter horse stallion for their 2001 babies.

When Ray and Marsha are not doing barn chores or taking care of the horses, they can be found riding the trails from their property. By the end of summer 2000, they had managed to develop nearly 30 miles of trail that usually keep the rider high up on the ridges. The elevation in this area ranges anywhere from 3000 to 4500 feet, has lots of views of old balds and includes a section along the North Carolina/Tennessee state line. "And, boy, is it beautiful!" declares Ray. On Sundays after church as many as 22 people will ride these trails for five to six hours. In fact, anyone who is interested in taking a trail ride in this lovely area should contact the H Bar W. Rides can be arranged anywhere from one to six hours, all depending on what you want. The cost ranges from $75 to $300. Who wants to go camping?

It is immediately apparent to anyone who spends time with Ray and Marsha how much they love what they do, and that is why they want each and every visitor to www.hbarw.com to feel at home. If you have any questions at all about information found on this site, they welcome you to e-mail, write or call them about it. After all, they have an infectious love for the Appaloosa breed and look forward to any opportunity to spread their enthusiasm.
